Editing video feedback and learner response

1) Type up your feedback/comments from your teacher.

  • Good continuity editing in the opening and followed by shot-reverse shot that initially follows 180° rule
  • Not related to editing but the mise-en-scene is great particularly props and choreography.
  • The cutaways/breaking fourth wall are creative and clearly differentiated from sequence although it does take you away from the brief a little
  • Do you break 180° rule later in the sequence with the wider shots?

2) Type up your feedback from fellow students.

WWW:

  • 180° rule
  • Narrative and angles
  • Shot reverse shot
  • Match on action on door + chair
  • Love interview scenes
  • Funny
  • Sound effects

EBI:

  • Match on action a little confusing
  • Didn't follow 180° rule at the end
  • Could have used more sound

3) Now reflect on your video. Did you meet the brief and successfully include the three key editing aspects we have learned?

  • In my opinion the video does meet the brief as it features a character entering a room and crossing it before sitting down and talking with another character, the video does successfully include the three key editing aspects we have learned but doesn't follow the 180° rule when in the wider shots.

4) What were the strengths and weaknesses of your final film? Write a detailed analysis picking out specific shots, edits and any other aspect of film language you think is relevant.

  • I think that one of my strengths was that I used a variety of aspects from film language including mise-en-scene, varying camera angles, lighting. For weaknesses I believe that following the 180° rule was the biggest one as during and after the montage we repeatedly broke the 180° rule.

5) Learner response: what aspect of editing did you find most difficult? What have you learned from this process that will help you when you start the actual coursework later this year?

  • I found making the match on action scenes transition seamlessly into each other slightly difficult as getting the timing right is challenging. From this process I have learned how important editing is to storytelling and how editing the same clips in different ways can drastically change how it is portrayed.
