Mise-en-scene analysis blog tasks

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

-The woman is wearing a robe which implies that at the time she was relaxing in her home when she was attacked by the person wielding the axe. The axe is closer to the camera making it seem like the woman is small which mirrors how she would be feeling at the time as she is terrified of the person with the axe and feels like there's nothing she can do. The knife being held by the woman seems dull and like it wouldn't be good for self defence which further shows the audience just how unprepared for the situation she is. The woman hiding in the corner of the room might have been used in order to show how she might be feeling cornered in this situation and like she has no way out. The tiles seen behind the woman might mean that she is in a bathroom which usually only have one entrance showing that she might not be in a location that she is used to as she managed to put herself in a situation where she cant escape her attacker, or the attacker knows the location better than her and managed to chase her into an inescapable situation.

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama) and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

clip one - Breakfast club

Clip two - A quiet place part II

In "Breakfast club" the characters run through the brightly lit hallways filled with bright yellow lockers that reflect the genre of the movie being a comedy, this contrasts with "A quiet place part II" where the characters are running through a worn down factory that seems to be falling apart suggesting that it has been a long time since anyone has repaired the building, this is further shown through the moss and overgrown grass that can be seen all over the place.

In both scenes the characters are running away from something, in "breakfast club" the characters are running away from someone who is dressed in a suit which shows that they aren't running away from him because they are scared of him but because they are trying to escape the school and he is the only one there that can stop them from achieving their goal. In "A quiet place part II" the characters are running away from a powerful monster that is hunting them down, this is shown through the creature charging towards them and breaking through different parts of the factory in an attempt to find them.

In "Breakfast club" the main characters are all wearing new looking and mostly colourful clothes that show that they haven't been worn for a long time, in contrast to this the characters in "A quiet place part II" are all wearing dull colours that seem to have been worn down over a long period of time suggesting to the audience that they are unable to get new clothes which shows the audience that they have been surviving in this place for a long time.
